If I am allergic to latex gloves, could I be allergic to a latex mattresses?

By Pradeepa_CML

It is not a good idea for anyone to sleep on a synthetic latex mattress. Here is why.

Synthetic rubber is synthesised from petroleum byproducts. The most prevalent synthetic rubbers are styrene-butadiene rubbers (SBR) derived from the copolymerization of styrene and 1,3-butadiene. SBR is toxic to the lungs, liver and brain. About 95% of isoprene production is used to produce cis-1,4-polyisoprene—a synthetic version of natural rubber.[7]

What causes latex allergies?

Simply put there are 2 things that cause latex allergies.

#1. Synthetic Rubber #2. Protein in some latex

Most people are allergic to latex gloves because it is (SBR) synthetic rubber which is toxic to the lungs, liver and brain. Allergies in latex gloves are also prevalent in health care workers is because there is a white protein powder that lines the gloves is continuously being snapped on and off releasing a protein people are allergic to in the air also causing allergic reactions to rubber. This is why less than 1% of the population has a sensitivity to latex but the incidence is much higher for health care workers.

The Mountain Air difference.

Our organic rubber, coming from latex of Hevea brasiliensis, is and is hypo-allergenic. Some people may be allergic to the protein in some natural rubbers. This is why our rubber is washed several times to wash proteins out of the rubber that one could potentially be allergic to. Most rubber that has protein in it are now normally processed into synthetic products such as latex gloves, tires and synthetic latex mattresses.

Our rubber is also encased in a organic cotton and wool casing so their is no direct contact with the skin. We have had clients with multiple chemical sensitivities who have done well on our mattresses because there is nothing to be allergic to since

#1. It’s not synthetic rubber

#2. Proteins have been washed out

#3. Encased so there is not any direct contact with the skin.

As a matter of fact, you really don’t smell much of anything in our rubber. If anything, initially it smells kinda sweet, but that quickly goes away and it is not harmful. So even if you are mildly allergic to latex you should do fine on our mattresses.

We have found everything in nature does have a smell and a chemical make up so there is no such thing as a “chemical free” mattress either. Our mattresses are “free of harmful chemicals” that can cause illness and allergy symptoms. We also recommend an organic mattress pad to keep your mattress sanitary and clean even though wool and rubber does not breed dust mites.

Wool mattresses quickly take body impressions so we don’t recommend them either. Most cotton mattresses is made of conventional cotton which is very hard, contains loads of pesticides and harbors bacteria. You will find there is nothing like sleeping on a “Real” organic latex mattress.

If you have concerns you may request a sample of our rubber by emailing NaturalBeds@Gmail.com. If you are mildly allergic to latex then you may feel more comfortable in having someone else assemble the mattress for you so you are not exposed to the latex cores.
